Audience Research

We have decided to devise a questionnaire in order to receive feedback about certain aspects of our project. We think it is important before creating our video to know what our audience would prefer to see, so it is suitable and appropriate for our target audience.

Our Questionnaire looked like this:

What genre of music do you listen to?
[ ] Indie/Alternative
[ ] Rock
[ ] Pop
[ ] Dance
[ ] R&B
How important is a music video to you?
[ ] Very important
[ ] Not very important
[ ] Not bothered
What would you prefer from a music video?
[ ] Artist Performance
[ ] Narrative/ Story
[ ] Special Effects
[ ] Live performance
Do you read music magazines? If so, which ones?
[ ] NME
[ ] Kerrang!
[ ] Q
[ ] MOJO
[ ] Don’t read music magazines

We chose these questions to ask because they are not just direct questions about what video we should make - we have also asked about the genre and magazines the person answering the survey prefers, to get a more rounded idea of the interests of our audience. We asked 20 people these questions, and collected our results.

You and Whose Army - Chosen Decision

We have decided to do 'You and Whose Army' by Radiohead for our music video!
We feel the interpretation of the lyrics to link them in with schizophrenia is a very good idea, and we came up with ideas for where to shoot the video as well as what it would involve.

Location - Woodland
Actors - 1 girl
Costume - 2 nighties (1 black 1 white) with added mesh, ballet shoes?
Props - Bird, Bird Cage
Makeup - Dark Eyeshadow (smudged) to be worn with black nightie

Lyrics + Interpretation (Further)

You and Whose Army? By Radiohead

Come on, Come on
You think you’ll drive me crazy, well
Come on, Come on
You and whose army?
You and your cronies
Come on, Come on
Holy Roman Empire
Come on if you think, Come on if you think
You can take us, on
You can take us, on
You and whose army?
You and your cronies
You forget so easy

We ride tonight
We ride tonight
Ghost horses, Ghost horses
We ride tonight
We ride tonight
Ghost horses, Ghost horses
Ghost horses, Ghost horses

These lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, as the 'army' theory could be takenly literally or metaphorically. However, we have decided to take the lyrics metaphorically and symbolically, and relate it to the idea of schizophrenia.
We feel that the person speaking/writing is struggling with their own mind; 'you think you'll drive me crazy', and 'you and whose army?' both represent this. It is the idea that a person is trying to overcome their inner thoughts that are attempting to take over, and we think this would be a good idea to work with in a video.

Lyrics and Interpretation

Codex by Radiohead

Sleight of hand
Jump off the end
Into a clear lake
No one around

Just dragonflies
Flying to the side
No one gets hurt
You’ve done nothing wrong

Slide your hand
Jump off the end
The water’s clear, and innocent
The water’s clear, and innocent

The lyrics here are very deep and can be interpreted to be related to 'suicide'. A lake is mentioned which therefore would need to be part of the video, and we think the video would be about a person who is alone, and wanting to escape from themselves. As the song is very calm and quiet, we thought we could portray a cleansing idea of a person trying to escape their problems

Initial Ideas for Music Video

The next step is deciding on a song to use, and we wanted to choose a song that was relatively slow, and had meaningful lyrics that we could relate the video to.

The songs we found fitted this description were:
  • Pyramid Song (Amnesiac)
  • Codex (The King of Limbs)
  • You and Whose Army (Amnesiac)
  • Morning Mr Magpie (The King of Limbs)
  • Weird Fishes (In Rainbows)
From here, we managed to narrow it down to 2 songs to choose between. They were:
Codex

You and Whose Army

Welcome to our blog!

Our group consists of Megan Lawrenson (left) and Helen Jones (right), and we have chosen for our A2 Media Studies Coursework to produce a music video for the existing artist Radiohead.

Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (vocals, guitars, keyboards), Jonny Greenwood (guitars, keyboards, other instruments), Ed O'Brien (guitars, backing vocals), Colin Greenwood (bass, synthesisers) and Phil Selway (drums, percussion).
Radiohead have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and the band's work has been placed highly in both listener polls and critics' lists. In 2005, Radiohead were ranked number 73 in Rolling Stone's list of "The Greatest Artists of All Time", while Ed O'Brien and Jonny Greenwood were both included in Rolling Stone's list of greatest guitarists, and Thom Yorke in their list of greatest singers. While the band's earlier albums were most influential on British rock and pop music, musicians in a wide variety of genres have been influenced by their later work.

Radiohead are on of our favourite bands, and therefore we have an existing interest with them and find that both their lyrics and videos are inspiring, and we would thoroughly enjoy producing a video of our own for one of their songs. As they have eight records to date, it takes careful consideration to decide on just one song!
